5 Tips for a Successful Business Portrait

Whenever I have a client in front of my camera for an updated head and shoulders portrait or branding session, I get the sense that my clients aren't really jazzed about the idea.
Let's face it, it is a vulnerable place to be!
But, we have to admit, a polished, professional headshot can speak volumes about you and how you feel about your business.
So, I am here to give you a few quick tips on how to prepare for a headshot session so you can walk in confidently, and walk away having successfully checked off one more box on your to-do list.
1) Take the time to have a consultation with your photographer.
When you are clear about your needs (head and shoulder, full body, background colors and what vibe you are going for, studio or location), things go much more smoothly! Your photographer will be prepared with posing and lighting ideas, and have a plan about how the session will proceed to make things as efficient and painless as possible. If you don't know which direction to go, your photographer should ask questions to help you make those decisions.
2) Be well groomed.
While I don't suggest running out for a brand new hairstyle the day before a portrait session, if things are looking a little untidy, a quick trim could go a long way in making the final product appear polished and professional. Fellas...that goes for facial hair too! Neat and trimmed goes a long way.
(Blemish or razor burn?? Not a problem. We can clear that up as part of our basic retouching service, as it is i ncluded in the price of your portrait.)
If you wear makeup, and are confident in doing your own makeup for photography, ensure that foundation matches well and it is blended. Try to avoid too much shimmer or glitter, as it can photograph harshly and show up as white dots versus sparkly. If you need help, consider a professional makeup artist! Simply tell them you are needing makeup application for photography, and they will use their expertise to bring your best face forward.
3) HYDRATE
Hydrated Skin = Glowy skin. Nuff said.
4) Choose clothing that fits well and compliments your skin tone.
Let's talk fit really quick: Too tight is restricting and uncomfortable. It will show in your portraits. Too big tends to look frumpy and unkempt. Find something that fits you well and have it freshly pressed and wrinkle-free.
As a rule, for a head and shoulders portrait I will always suggest at least one option with long sleeves. It helps to avoid an awkward patch of skin at the bottom of the frame when cropped, and leads all eyes toward that fabulous face of yours.
Solid colors work best. I usually suggest medium to dark tones, as they are universally flattering, and draw more attention upward. The exception would be a white dress shirt under a jacket. That is a classic look, and you pretty much can't go wrong. As much as I love creative prints, they can tend to be distracting and pull the viewers eye away from what your are selling.....that is YOU.
5) Get adequate sleep.
Self-explanatory. you can stay up late watching your favorite TV shows and scrolling social media, but can also wind up sporting a couple new under eye bags. Do yourself a favor, get some extra rest the night before your portrait session. It's probably a good idea to get adequate rest anyway. ;)
